“53% of visitors abandon a site if it takes more than 3 seconds to load.” These words of warning were repeated during the CRO workshop that four Forbytes front-end developers and UI/UX designers participated in. In mid-April, the quartet visited Stockholm, but not to take in the shy sun. The goal was to expand their knowledge of conversion rate optimization.
That page speed is important is not news. We have all at some point abandoned a slowly loading site and never bothered to return. The CRO workshop provided statistics that confirmed what we already suspected – there is nothing that mobile users hate more than when a page takes too long to load. However, page speed is important not just for the user experience but also for your page ranking in search engines. What is more, come July 2018 the page speed for mobiles will become an even more significant factor in your site’s ranking with Google. These changes will also affect your ad rank and cost-per-click rate. This means that optimizing your site for mobile users is more important than ever.
Room to improve your conversion rate optimization
The workshop provided more than just dire warnings. There were plenty of helpful tips on how to investigate how your site is currently performing. Additionally, it underlined that finding out that your site has problems is not necessarily a bad thing. Much like in other aspects of your life it’s a chance for improvement, and with July two months away there is still time to make changes to avoid penalization.
As search engines aim to provide their users with the best possible results, unsurprisingly the focus of the workshop lay on the user experience. How do most visitors use a site on mobile? How do you make your call to action stand out? What is the best layout for your site? How do you improve page speed? How do you make the most of your A/B testing?
