Magento 1 Upgrade to Magento 2 Myths

End of support for Magento 1 is getting closer with each day. Surprisingly, there are still many websites that have not made their upgrade to Magento 2. Why? There are many different reasons, of course. However, very often this is caused by simple misinformation and myths.

So, we have prepared and gone through the list of the most common misconceptions about Magento 1 upgrade. Hopefully, it will help you make that all-important decision. Here we go!

Myth 1. I will lose data about my clients and my store.

This is not true. In fact, if you have access to your Magento 1 website (and why wouldn’t you), you are most likely to lose none of the data.

Moving information about your customers, orders, products, prices, categories, etc. to the new website is a very simple process. What’s more, experienced developers can write a few scripts that will move that data automatically and without any hassle!

Myth 2. My website will lose its ranking in Google.

Again, untrue. You will be able to move all of your current SEO to the new website, just like you did with the rest of the data. Magento 1 upgrade will not cause you to lose your ranking and all that hard work of getting to the top will not be lost!

Besides, Magento 2 comes with some very useful SEO features right out of the box, such as SEO-friendly URLs, meta tags for products, image optimization and more. So, not only will you not lose your SEO, you will actually have great tools at your disposal to improve it. If you want to go even further with SEO, there are many Magento extensions that can help you out.

Myth 3. I will lose time and resources by having to reintegrate many systems.

Moving to the new platform will cost you both time and resources – there is no way around it. Since Magento 1 and 2 have different architecture, integrations with external systems (such as CRM) will have to be done from scratch. However, doing this on Magento 2 is not that difficult. In fact, when compared to the same integrations on 1, it is a lot easier.

This is because a lot of things in 2 are separated into APIs (application programming interfaces). They provide building blocks for software that developers can put together and create what you require. Since you don’t have to build big chunks of software from scratch, APIs will save you both time and resources. They will also make your website more flexible, easier to administer and open to innovations.

Myth 4. My website will be down during Magento 1 upgrade and I will lose customers.

Upgrade time may differ based on how difficult your requirements and customizations are. However, the important thing to remember is: your website will keep on working during the entire process!

Customers will be using your original website while you are making all the necessary preparations. Once everything is ready, you simply switch to the new website. Your customers will not notice anything, besides a brand-new look of your E-Commerce store.

Myth 5. I won’t be able to use Magento extensions that help me manage my store.

Will you be able to move your extensions to the new website? No. Will you be able to keep using them? Most probably, yes.

It may sound contradicting but there is actually a very simple explanation. With end-of-life date drawing closer, teams are developing versions of their extensions that will work on the new platform as well. So, if, for example, you have a payment method plug-in that you really like – do not worry. Most likely you can already find a version of it for the new platform on the Magento marketplace. If not, you will probably be able to in the near future.

Myth 6. My URLs won’t work and customers won’t find my store.

As mentioned before, during Magento 1 upgrade you will move all of your data and SEO to the new website. This includes various adjustments you made, meta descriptions and, yes, URLs. All of them will work as before unless you deliberately change them.

Myth 7. My website will become slower after Magento 1 upgrade.

Magento 2 supports the latest and quickest technologies. So, unless you are greatly increasing the size of your store, it will definitely not become slower.

On the contrary, if you acquire help from an experienced Magento 2 development team, your website will only win in speed. Your store will have faster load speed, smoother checkouts, and better user experience.

Do not hesitate – upgrade!

If there is one thing you should take out of all of this – it’s that you should do a Magento 1 upgrade.

Yes, the decision to move on to new technologies is often difficult (just think about how many people are still using Windows 7 instead of the newer Windows 10).

However, keep in mind that Magento 1 support ends in June 2020. Using it afterward will only result in increased security risks to your website and, as a result, your entire E-Commerce business. Risks that you will not be able to protect yourself from.

So, contact an experienced Magento 2 development team, upgrade and reap the rewards!
